What to Expect Entering Kindergarten

Kindergarten is the first year a student will be taking the STAR test for Early Literacy and Numeracy skills. This is a computer based test that provides teachers with data on skills students have mastered and still need to work on. Students will take these STAR tests at least three times throughout the year to measure progress.

By the end of Kindergarten, students are expected to be reading in leveled books at a level C or above, and are expected to know at least 25 sight words from the first FRY word list.

What to Expect Entering 2nd Grade

While some 2nd graders are still working through the Early Literacy skills, other are progressing beyond and will be given The STAR Reading test and the STAR Math test. This test measures a student's progress toward state and district reading objectives as well as a student's grade equivalent performance score. They will take these tests at least 3 times throughout the year to measure progress.

By the end of 2nd grade students are expected to be reading at or above a level M, and know the frist 300 sight words from the FRY word list.

What to Expect Entering 4th Grade

4th graders will be given the STAR test for both Reading and Math at least 3 times throughout the year. They will also take the district assessments 3 times throughout the year to prepare for the State Tests in April.

By the end of 4th grade, students are expected to be reading at or above level S.

In fourth grade students now begin rotating classes-they will no longer have just one teacher all day. They will rotate to classes in different subjects like Math, Science, Social Studies, and Writing.

What to Expect Entering 1st Grade

First Graders will also be given the STAR test in Early Literacy and Numeracy at the beginning of the year in order to gather data on skills students have mastered and still need to work on. Students will take the STAR test at least 3 times throughout the year.

1st Graders are progressing from emergent readers to reading real stories. By the end of 1st grade, students are expected to be reading at or above level I, and are expected to know the first 100 sight words from the FRY word list in December and the second 100 by May.

What to Expect Entering 3rd Grade

Big changes occurr in 3rd grade. Students will still be given the STAR test for Reading and Math at least 3 times throughout the year, but they will also begin district assessments in preparation for State Testing at the end of the year. District assessments take place in the Fall, Winter, and Spring semesters and measure a student's progress toward state and district standards. Like the STAR test, these assessments are administered on the computer.

By the end of 3rd grade, students are expected to be reading at or above level P, and know the frist 300 sight words from the FRY word list.

3rd grade takes their frist State Tests in the spring. These tests are for Reading and Math. State law mandates that students who score unsatisfactory on the Reading test will be retained for one year. If you have any questions or concerns about this, please feel free to call your child's teacher, the principal, or your state legislator.

What to Expect Entering 5th Grade

Along with taking the STAR and District tests as 3rd and 4th graders do, 5th grade takes State Tests in all 5 subject areas; Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies. While the majority of state tests take place in April, the Writing test usually occurs in late February.

5th grade students will be expected to be able to compose pieces of writing in multiple genres including narrative, non-fiction essays, and persuasive essays.

By the end of 5th grade, students are expected to be reading at or above level V.

5th grade is also departmentalized, like 4th grade they will rotate to classes in different subjects.
